The makers of Rice Dream have just brought out a new product called Oat Dream. Its oat milk, but their version of it. Just got it there and it tastes quite nice.

Sun, 29/01/2012 - 11:11
Hi everyone!

does anyone know if your average cheese slice contain animal rennin? I'm pretty happy with the bacterial one, so just wondering if anyone has info on what major cheese use animal rennin or vege/bacterial rennin?

thanks!

I'm looking for a Vegetarian moussaka recipie

Sat, 28/01/2012 - 19:09
Last month on holidays I tired moussaka for the first time, I was never a fan of aubergines before but it was lovely.

I found a recipie on the internet and followed it but it wasn't the same, all the vegetables seemed very stewed and the cheese sauce seemed to have no definate flavour.

If anyone has a recipie or indeed a link to a recipie that they'd like to share I'd be very grateful.

I've two hopeful aubergines waiting in the fridge - Thank you :pac::pac::pac:

Access to vegan foods/health food stores in Ireland? (spec. Co. Cork)

Wed, 25/01/2012 - 14:23
Hello! My husband and I are looking at moving into the area in the next few years and we're both vegan, and wondering how accessible vegan foods/health food stores are there? We're specifically looking at Co. Cork, so that's the area we'd really need to know about. By vegan foods, I mean things like false meat, kombucha, yerba maté, natural household products, organic foods, etc. Thanks in advance! :D

Date fruit

Sat, 21/01/2012 - 18:01
Where is the best place in Dublin to buy natural dates? I've seen them in supermarkets like Superquinn and Lidl but they were coated in glucose syrup. Yuck.

I thought this would be the best forum to ask..
Thanks :)

Hi there,

I'm looking for some ideas for vegetarian buffet food. Something that is a bit substantial, ideas that non-vegetarians might opt for as well.

Moser Roth dark chocolate no longer vegan

Mon, 16/01/2012 - 09:04
Good morning all, I just thought I'd let you vegans know that I discovered that two of the dark chocolate bars in Aldi that used to be vegan now contain milk - the orange & almond and the mint. The warning labels used to say may contain traces of milk whereas now it says "contains milk".

Vegan mineral water?

Sun, 15/01/2012 - 22:44
Hi all, does anybody know what the story is with tap water in Ireland and mineral waters for sale in Ireland and whether they are vegetarian/vegan? I understand that animal bone char is sometimes used in the water filtration process...Thanks.

The Hopsack has expanded!

Fri, 13/01/2012 - 21:56
Good news for a change, (after Juice and Cafe Fresh updates) are that the Hopsack in Rathmines seems to have expanded. They have a fresh organic fruit and veg section (including the rarely sighted irish organic apples). My companion did notice some meat based dogfood and there are some fishy things (as before) but they also now have an eat-in area and veggie salad bar. The fridge and freezer spaces are bigger too.

And they have a refill station for Lilly's laundry liquid and washing up liquid (although we are still waiting for clarification as to whether Lilly's products are still vegan, now that they've dropped some logo stuff, with the change in packaging).

Cafe Fresh (Dublin) closed?

Tue, 10/01/2012 - 13:47
I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about Cafe Fresh? It seems to be shut, but there are no signs up anywhere to say when they are reopening. They may be shut for renovations (there are markings on the floor), but I would have thought there would be a sign up.

Dull taste from Indian vegetarian food

Thu, 05/01/2012 - 18:17
I find it hard nowadays to find a tasty Indian curry that isn't loaded with that yellowy oil - veg. oil probably. I heard some genetically modified veg is being grown in India. Perhaps this is one reason for the lack of taste, or even the over use of pesticide could be another. A few years ago I used to really enjoy a curry from these places but not so much now. :(
Btw I was eating meat back then.

Vegetarian Cheese?

Wed, 04/01/2012 - 15:31
I've noticed a few times when I'm buying cheese that the ingredients may include rennet, but it has 'suitable for vegetarians' on the labeling. Am I to assume that it contains vegetarian rennet as apposed to animal rennet?

Which leads me onto another question: Who regulates the 'suitable for vegetarians' label in Ireland, or is it up to the companies themselves to include it on their products. If so, can they be wrong/misinformed and mistakes can happen? I'm been trying to find this out on google, but my searches are unfruitful =(

Fish oils / do we need them for Heart health?

Tue, 03/01/2012 - 13:11
Long time reader of this thread and I don't think this has been answered anywhere else.
Been a veggie for 11 years and just recently read the study that women of child bearing age would reduce their risk of heart attack/stroke by 90% if they ate oily fish 1-2 times per week.
Now I am in my late 40's and all child bearing days behind me, but it has made me question am I doing damage to my heart by not eating fish as I have cardiac problems on both Mam and Dad's side.. None myself thank God except for raised cholesterol last year which I lowered by diet..
I take Udo's oil each day on my food and eat a wide range of veg & fruit, but is this sufficient...
Sorry this is so long, but it is a worry, maybe someone has an answer for me..
Cheers

A question for ethical vegans/vegetarians?

Mon, 02/01/2012 - 12:22
I've only recently embraced vegetarianism with the ultimate goal of eventually becoming vegan, but I adore the taste of eggs and cheese so I imagine it would be extremely difficult. I've been wondering, though. If I was to rear the animals responsible for producing these foods and ensured that they were treated with the best care and dignity that I could afford, would that be unethical of me? I mean, I already care for a wonderful Border Collie and I can't draw a distinction between the keeping of a dog and the keeping of a chicken or goat. The idea of readopting my former carnivorous ways (if the animal were to die of natural causes in my care) wouldn't sit right with me but I don't see anything unethical in using an egg from a hen or milk from a cow that I accord the same love and care that I demonstrate to my dog. The reason I've become disillusioned with the consumption of animal products is the ill-treatment they are subjected to by mainstream animal industry practices but I feel that by caring for the animals myself, I could effectively eliminate that injustice.

I'm just curious to see what other people think about this.

Hi all

Has anyone spotted Vitalite for sale anywhere in Dublin? Preferably city centre or south side?

I've bought it before in Dunnes and maybe Tesco, but haven't seen it in ages.

Thanks

Asking in Restaurants

Wed, 21/12/2011 - 02:49
Hey guys, been lurking this forum for a while (turned veg last month, don't miss anything yet) and getting loads of information.

But I'll be going out with friends to a restaurant soon (I don't know which one) and am a bit worried about ordering. How do you guys ask if something is vegetarian (particularly if it contains certain cheeses/gelatin/meat stock) without seeming like an irritating prick? I know not everyone knows about what vegetarians will/won't eat, and I don't expect the waitor to know what goes into every single dish on the menu.

Your stories/advice would be appreciated =)
