boards.ie: Recent topics - Fri, 19/04/2013 - 18:36
Hi All! Name is Peter, i like fitness and bodybuilding. About 8 months ago i went vegetarian, and about 3 months ago i went vegan. All after reading ph miracle book and the amazing gallblader and liver cleanse book. Before i was 90kg with 15% bodyfat and now im 74kg with 9% bodyfat. I lost my muscles even dough i kept working out, my energy is down and im tired. I developed a lot of gas and bloating. Im blood type O and pitta body type. I dont look and feel the best. Prior this i was eating loads of red meat and fish according to book Eat right for you type, no wheat or dairy and i felt good and had power and energy. But i wanted to be healthy so i went vegan. My current sample diet:

6am- glass of water with fresh squeezed lemon.

6.30- half cucumber, 1 celery stick, handfull brocoli, handful spinach leaves, 1 organic carot, 1 organic apple- juiced in masticating juicer.

9am- bowl of wheat free poridge with soaked almonds and wallnuts.

11am-organic apple and banana

12:30 - big bowl of fresh salad

4pm 3-4 slices of spelt bread wit unsalted butter scalions, radish, cherry tomato

7pm- veg stir fry and bassmati rice

9pm- wheatgrass juice.

On workout day i have big smoothie of banana, half avocado, fresh apple juice and scoop of pea protein. - half before and half after workout.

I dont have any allergies or ilness and havent seen doctor since i was 17, im 35 now.
I just dont want to be like a scaleton without energy. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

Gas

boards.ie: Recent topics - Thu, 18/04/2013 - 13:01
So, I turned vegan a couple of weeks ago. I was feeling brilliant up until Monday. Since then I have been bloated, and having lots of gas. Terrible, terrible, rotten stuff hahaha. It's awful.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if any of you have experienced this? Will this pass once my body gets used to the new diet, or will I be left being a stinker for the rest of my life? :o

Advice?

boards.ie: Recent topics - Wed, 17/04/2013 - 16:27
hey ho! :)

Last month I started watching a lot of documentaries (nothing food based, just the last Oscar nominated bunch). Got hooked. Needed more. A friend recommended Food Inc. I watched it. I was disturbed, but I wanted to know more. I watched Earthlings.

 <-- this was my face.

I then watched Forks over Knives. Ironically this had more of an effect.

The decision has been made. I just can't do it anymore, and I have to stop eating animal based products.

My problem is this......

Yes, I do feel horrible looking at those videos of slaughterhouses, animals being skinned alive etc., but I feel it's more of a personal health thing that has convinced me (hence why I think Knives over Forks had more of an effect). is this a bad thing? :o

I suppose, I want a whole food, plant based diet. How does this differ from veganism? Is there a difference?

i'm mad feckin confused, and don't know where to start, and I think the main problem facing me is that I live in Japan and will be here for another 3 months.

Japan and vegetarianism are an odd couple. I mean....YES they eat more veg on average, but.....for example.....I once went to a ramen restaurant with a vegetarian friend. She ordered the 'veg' ramen. She quickly discovered the stock was pork stock. :( Plus a lot of ingredients I've seen for vegan recipes are next to impossible to get in my area in Japan. Not to mention finding ingredients is 100X harder when not in English. :pac: I MAY have to put it off until I get back to Ireland, but I don't want to.

Thoughts? Ideas?......help? :P

If this post comes off as confusing....it's because I'm confused. :P

(PS for Tar.....I'm the poster formally known as Funky Penguin! :))

Desmond and Gabriel Cheese

boards.ie: Recent topics - Wed, 10/04/2013 - 20:28
When in Dublin I sometimes buy the yummy Desmond or Gabriel cheese as a vegetarian alternative to Parmesan. When buying it last I was told that Bill Hogan and Sean Ferry who make these may no longer be making them.

Their West Cork Natural Cheese website is no longer active and their email doesn't work either.

If anyone has any further information as to if Desmond and Gabriel are no more please let us know.

( I know there is another Irish Parmesan alternative Imokilly regatto but I've yet to try it or find it).

Scamorza?

boards.ie: Recent topics - Sun, 07/04/2013 - 10:55
Anyone know if the scamorza cheese in Tiesan's 'Vegetarian' breakfast is made with vegetarian rennet?

I'm looking for somewhere to go for breakfast.

I know I could ask the cafe themselves but chances are they will think the usual - no it doesn't have meat in it....

What do you feed your pets?

boards.ie: Recent topics - Wed, 03/04/2013 - 19:31
I don't have pets so this is more curiosity than anything else. What do you as veg*ns feed your pets? Do you feel you have a responsibility as to adhere to your lifestyle when it comes to your pets diet or do you think you should feed your pet what they would 'naturally' eat? I'm very interested to here from those motivated by the environmental impact of the farming industry since apparently the carbon footprint of a dogs diet is the equivalent of two land cruisers (my source is QI so I guess the reliability could be debated).

I know there are some vegan/vegetarian pets food out there but from what I've found online some vets say that it's a risk to pets health althoughI couldn't find information on why exactly. I understand some animals are carnivores so does this mean unlike us omnivores does this mean they can't absorb nutrients from vegetable sources like we do? If you feed your dog on plant based food do you feel vets who are against it are simply being close minded, much like some doctors can be?

Dairy free milk for tea

boards.ie: Recent topics - Tue, 02/04/2013 - 14:54
I know there was a similar thread a few months back but the two recommendations were soy milk and coconut milk. I've had soy milk before and can't stand the stuff. It's not a case of getting used to it since I had to drink it for a few months and have tried sweetened, unsweetened and flavoured. I just think it has an awful aftertaste and the taste in general is too strong when using in other stuff for my liking.

I like coconut milk in general but it doesn't seem to work so well in tea for me. The tea tastes more like black tea and the milk seems to settle at the bottom if I don't keep stirring it. I also get left with a weird residue in my mouth.

I'm picky about tea so not expecting to find anything I like in it as much as cows milk but hoping to find something I can get used to. I know there's different herbal teas and I do plan to drink more of them but I would still like the odd cuppa now and then. I prefer something that won't flavour the tea too much but takes the edge of of it if you get me. I plan to try all the milks I can anyway but I'm an unemployed student so can't buy that many at once.

Edit: Wish you could change thread titles, it's non-dairy milk not dairy free...

Tesco Meat Free Range in the UK

boards.ie: Recent topics - Mon, 01/04/2013 - 16:26
I was searching to see if those Tesco Meat free hotdogs are still available in Ireland and ended up on the tesco UK site to see if they were available at all over there.

As it turns out the range of Tesco Meat free products in the UK is nearly the same size as Quorn's. http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Produ...&search=Search

Might be worth emailing Tesco Ireland and asking if they have any plans to increase their range over here too.
