Tesco Meat Free Range in the UK
I was searching to see if those Tesco Meat free hotdogs are still available in Ireland and ended up on the tesco UK site to see if they were available at all over there.
As it turns out the range of Tesco Meat free products in the UK is nearly the same size as Quorn's. http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Produ...&search=Search
Might be worth emailing Tesco Ireland and asking if they have any plans to increase their range over here too.

Monounsaturated fats reduce metabolic syndrome risk
Canola oil and high-oleic canola oils can lower abdominal fat when used in place of other selected oil blends, according to a new study. Researchers also found that consuming certain vegetable oils may be a simple way of reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome, which affects about one in three US adults and one in five Canadian adults.

Better-educated parents feed children fewer fats and less sugar
Almost 15,000 children aged between two and nine years old took part in the study. The level of education of parents has an influence on the frequency with which their children eat foods linked to obesity. The children of parents with low and medium levels of education eat fewer vegetables and fruit and more processed products and sweet drinks.

Vegan junk food
Hey so I'm sure this gets asked a lot around here but I was wondering if theres any biscuits or general junk in spar or centra that just happens to be vegan. I tend to eat healthily but it would be nice to be able to just pick up a pack of biscuits every now and then if I find myself in one of those fine establishments.
Cheers!

Modest changes in military dining facilities promoted healthier eating
The prevalence of obesity within the military is currently 13 percent. This rising epidemic, also rampant throughout the general population, could result in military career setbacks, negatively impact operational readiness, and jeopardize Department of Defense operations. To combat the epidemic, a team of researchers chose the military cafeteria as the venue to observe and evaluate eating behavior and the positive impact of modest changes to promote healthy eating and food selection.

ready made/instant vegetarian meals, do they exist?
Hi all
Maybe a bit of a strange question, but I'm going to ask it anyway
Is there such a thing as ready made or instant vegetarian meals? I have recently just made the switch from going vegan/it just didn't work out for me, to being vegetarian again. I have absolutely no interest in cooking, but do want to eat well if I can/maybe that's a contridiction in terms, but like title says, do meals such as these exist?
I'm not particularly fussed on fake meets or tofu, and by instant I don't just mean microwave, though I'm open to this, I can absolutely wait 20 minutes if necessary for something to cook in the oven.
I know I might be being picky now, but if possible suggestions of stuff that isn't full of salt/preservitives would be great two. I know I am probably unique when it comes to being vegetarian and having no interest in cooking, but I just really don't have the inclination plus I am visually impaired two so any thing that makes life easier is a bonus. Not playing the VI card or anything I mean the main reason for this thread is what I've said above, but my visual impairment does play a part in just wanting things to be simple and easy.
I eat eggs but hate quorn just to save people suggesting the quorn stuff. I can't see at all so can't really read lists of ingredience, which is why I ask for suggestions of stuff that's not full of salt/preservitives, because I can't really be asking people in my local shop to read out the ingredience of everything I want to buy, and same if I ask someone to pick something up in a supermarket.
Last edit...
I'm open to things that are easy to cook fresh but that just don't need loads of preparation.
Realise that ready meals are no way to sustain long-term health...
Any help would be so much appreciated and thanks for reading. :)

Before going veggie, did you eat meat every day?
Random question for those that used to eat meat: before you went veg*n, did you eat meat every day? Or do meat eating members of your family do so?
The reason I'm asking is, bizarre as it might sound, I've only recently discovered that this seems to be the norm in Ireland. When I was growing up, none of my family were vegetarian (they still aren't), but we always had 2 or 3 vegetarian dinners per week. I just assumed everyone else did too, but have recently found out that lots of if not most people eat meat every single day of their lives. I just think that's really strange!
So yeah, were veggie meals a thing in your houses?

EU Ban on Animal Tested Cosmetics
Hi there!
I posted this in the cruelty free make up forum but thought I would post it here as well so more people might see! I'm so excited!!!!!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-21740745
Here is a copy of the content from the BBC:
A complete ban on the sale of cosmetics developed through animal testing has taken effect in the EU.
The ban applies to all new cosmetics and their ingredients sold in the EU, regardless of where in the world testing on animals was carried out.
The 27 EU countries have had a ban on such tests in place since 2009. But the EU Commission is now asking the EU's trading partners to do the same.
Animal rights lobbyists said EU officials had "listened to the people".
The anti-vivisection group BUAV and the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) said they had spent more than 20 years campaigning on the issue and had enlisted celebrities including Sir Paul McCartney, Morrissey and Sienna Miller to their cause. They congratulated the EU Commission for putting the ban into effect.
But BUAV says many countries in the world still test on animals for cosmetics and the group is now pressing for a global ban.
Mice and rats are used for more than half of all lab animal tests carried out in the EU.
Despite the EU's 2009 ban, cosmetics firms were allowed to continue testing on animals for the most complex human health effects, such as toxicity which might lead to cancer. However, those tests now come under the ban too.
The EU Commission says it is working with industry to develop more alternatives to animal testing, and that it allocated 238m euros (£208m; $310m) in 2007-2011 for such research.
Cosmetics firms are concerned that the ban could put Europe at a competitive disadvantage in a global market.
Cosmetics Europe chief Bertil Heerink, quoted by the Associated Press news agency, said that "by implementing the ban at this time, the European Union is jeopardising the industry's ability to innovate".

Looking for high protien veggie options
I may be repeating previous posts here, but was looking for some help in sourcing some high protein, veggie options. Been filling my protein needs far too much with fatty, expensive meat options, so looking for healthier, cheaper alternatives. I've gone down the token tofu route, and wasn't a massive fan, so was wondering if there is anything else out there that's available (in Dublin area stores preferably) that any vegetarians might suggest? Thanks!

A sausage a day is too many, research suggests
Anyone who eats over 40 grams a day of sausage products or other kinds of processed meat is asking for trouble: The risk of mortality increases by 18 percent for every 50 grams of processed meat per day. This is the result of a study conducted with around 450,000 participants by the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Zurich in collaboration with research colleagues from all over Europe.

Vegetarian Jelly
I managed to get my hands on some of this for use in a cheesecake. The recipe calls for non-vegetarian jelly to be melted with a couple of tbsp of boiling water. Can anyone advise on whether I can just add a boiling water to the vegetarian stuff a little at a time, or is it more temperamental to work with?

Vegan Philosophy?
I've recently become vegan.
I'm wondering if any other vegans could tell me how the conduct themselves towards meat eaters...
Do you say...
1. It's your choice. I've made mine and don't want to force It upon anybody.
2. I am a vegan for a reason. Here's why. If you agree join me. If not, this is okay.
3. The manipulation of defenceless animals is disgusting and as a non-vegan you are contributing to this?
Cheers :P
