A sausage a day is too many, research suggests

Science Daily: Vegetarian Diet Newsfeed - Thu, 07/03/2013 - 18:48
Anyone who eats over 40 grams a day of sausage products or other kinds of processed meat is asking for trouble: The risk of mortality increases by 18 percent for every 50 grams of processed meat per day. This is the result of a study conducted with around 450,000 participants by the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Zurich in collaboration with research colleagues from all over Europe.

Vegetarian Jelly

boards.ie: Recent topics - Wed, 06/03/2013 - 15:53
I managed to get my hands on some of this for use in a cheesecake. The recipe calls for non-vegetarian jelly to be melted with a couple of tbsp of boiling water. Can anyone advise on whether I can just add a boiling water to the vegetarian stuff a little at a time, or is it more temperamental to work with?

Vegan Philosophy?

boards.ie: Recent topics - Mon, 04/03/2013 - 02:22
I've recently become vegan.

I'm wondering if any other vegans could tell me how the conduct themselves towards meat eaters...

Do you say...

1. It's your choice. I've made mine and don't want to force It upon anybody.

2. I am a vegan for a reason. Here's why. If you agree join me. If not, this is okay.

3. The manipulation of defenceless animals is disgusting and as a non-vegan you are contributing to this?

Cheers :P

Grape seed and skin extract: A weapon in the fight against kidney disease caused by high-fat diets

Science Daily: Vegetarian Diet Newsfeed - Thu, 28/02/2013 - 18:46
New insight into grape seed extract as a therapeutic and preventative measure to fight obesity-induced kidney damage is presented in a new study. Grape seed and skin extract (GSSE) is known to contain powerful antioxidants. This study is the first to make a link between GSSEs and high-fat-diet-induced renal disease.

How long does cooked Quorn mince last?

boards.ie: Recent topics - Wed, 27/02/2013 - 15:25
I've had some chilli con (sin) carne in the fridge for probably a week now if not more, but it looks fine. I know if it's left out it goes a much darker colour and I've always thrown it out, this stuff looks fine though. Smells fine too although obviously it's a fairly strong smell from the sauces and spices.

Libertarian paternalism and school lunches: Guiding healthier behavior while preserving choices

Science Daily: Vegetarian Diet Newsfeed - Tue, 26/02/2013 - 23:25
New US Department of Agriculture regulations have altered what foods schools offer for lunch, but schools cannot require students to eat specific foods. Researchers have now implemented an intervention using the behavioral science principle known as "libertarian paternalism" which led junior-senior high school students to eat more fruits and vegetables by making these foods more convenient, attractive, and normative.

Getting enough minerals/nutrients ?

boards.ie: Recent topics - Fri, 22/02/2013 - 20:33
Hi

First post here

I'm 14(male) and I'm vegetarian .

I am wondering am I getting enough of minerals/acids/nutrients for my metabolism .

I don't eat vegetables except carrots and potatoes the odd time .

I don't eat nuts or fruits ( except bananas and clementines)

Salad is disgusting

The only things I really eat are :
Pasta (white)
bread(white)
potato waffles
pizza
chips
Bananas
biscuits
clementines
white rice
yogurt
Beans on toast
Coco pops :D

There is a few other small things that i don't eat regularly .

If it makes any difference I don't play sport at all .

I guess I'm a lacto-vegetarian ( I don't eat meat or eggs)

Thanks

Smarter lunchrooms make lunch choices child's play

Science Daily: Vegetarian Diet Newsfeed - Fri, 22/02/2013 - 14:31
In Jan. 2012, the United States Department of Agriculture passed a series of regulations designed to make school lunches more nutritious, which included requiring schools to increase whole grain offerings and making students select either a fruit or vegetable with their purchased lunch. However, children cannot be forced to eat these healthier lunches. In a new study, researchers determined that small, inexpensive changes to school cafeterias influenced the choice and consumption of healthier foods.

Vegan pizza in JC's

boards.ie: Recent topics - Thu, 21/02/2013 - 18:44
Hey all!
I was in JC's Swords today and while perusing the vegetarian frozen section I noticed a vegan pepperoni pizza! Thought I might share it here. It's a bit pricey (over €5) so I'd rather make my own pizzas, but it's always good seeing some new vegan friendly products.

Veggie baby!

boards.ie: Recent topics - Tue, 19/02/2013 - 13:01
Hi all!!! Ok I've already posted this in another thread, just now realised I might get more info here!

My boyfriend & I have decided to raise our baby vegetarian like ourselves. I genuinely believe a vegetarian diet is a healthier & more natural way to live. The little man is 10 months old now with an ever increasing appetite.

He already has plenty of iron & protein in his diet, but I'm wondering what's a good way to boost his B12 intake. I'd prefer not to give him supplements since I believe it's possible for him to get all the nutrition he needs from what he eats. Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food and all that jazz.

He was breastfed for 6 months & is currently getting all his B12 needs from formula. But over the next few months he'll be having less of that. So I'm wondering if anybody has advice on what foods are best. He has no allergies to anything.

Any comments/advice are welcome! Thanks!

Vegan Hair Bleach

boards.ie: Recent topics - Sat, 16/02/2013 - 18:17
Anyone know of any vegan hair bleaching kits? I know that the Manic Panic kit is vegan but I cannot find anywhere that ships to Ireland to buy it and as far as I know it's not sold in any shops here. Crazy Colour's bleaching kit is vegetarian suitable but they say they can't confirm if their ingredients are tested on animals so I'd rather not use it.

The Horsemeat scandal - does it make you worry?

boards.ie: Recent topics - Fri, 15/02/2013 - 14:20
Hi folks,

just wondering what people are thinking/feeling about this horsemeat scandal?

Obviously processed meat products are not something I buy, but I am concerned that the integrity of the food production industry has been seriously compromised. In which case, who is to say that meat of any origin could not find its way into vegetarian processed foods?

I buy Linda McCartney lasagne, burgers and pies about once a month. I also at times buy tesco own brand burgers.

I now find myself very concerned about my purchases!

anyone else worried about this?

Vegan Cola Bottles and Mini Bears in Holland and Barrett!

boards.ie: Recent topics - Mon, 11/02/2013 - 21:51
Heya! I found these by accident and thought I'd post in case you hadn't heard.

Holland and Barrett are selling small bags of sweets with text on the front stating 'Suitable for Vegans'. I saw cola bottles, mini bears and jelly beans! Nyom nyom nyom :) I think they were €1.99 a pack. Made by Neal's Yard Wholefoods.

My apologies if it has already been posted, but I did a quick search and didn't find a mention.
