Welcome back to Our Glorious D3 Generator!
The Vegetarian Society of Ireland would like to extend a warm welcome to Our Glorious Guest, the Blinding D3 generator from Outer Space, and wish to offer our bare arms (necks, faces, knobbly knees) as a sign of friendship!
So that's how we get our essential intake of vitamin D when the summer sun finally shines on Ireland. In winter time, though, the sun is too low in the sky, at our latitude, to generate vitamin D in our skin. That's important because recent research has linked deficiencies of vitamin D to a whole host of nasties such as fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, upper respiratory tract infections, premenstrual syndrome, polycystic ovary disease, psoriasis, muscle weakness, lower back pain, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer.
So what are we to do in Ireland during the lean winter period? Do we have enough stored from the summer to last us 'til the following summer? Should we fly south to top-up with sunshine or could taking a supplement be sufficient? If you are curious (and hopefully you are) about what we should do to stay healthy then please read what registered dietician Jack Norris has written after detailed research.
